US Navy MQ-4C Triton Unmanned Aircraft Systems to be Deployed From Florida

The U.S. Navy has selected Naval Station (NS) Mayport in Florida as the East Coast Forward Operating Base (FOB) for the MQ-4C Triton Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS), Feb. 15, 2017. Mayport will be a permanent duty station for about 400 Triton UAS personnel and will support rotational deployments outside the continental United States. Facility construction will begin this year with the first Triton UAS scheduled to arrive in 2020.

Europe's only fixed wing and rotary UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) provider, UMS Skeldar, has completed delivery and acceptance tests for Indonesia of the Skeldar V-200 VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) UAV. Kelvin Hughes continues to enjoy considerable success in exporting its maritime systems to Malaysia. Kelvin Hughes was contracted by Boustead Naval Shipyard (via their in-country representative D’Aquarian Services Sdn Bhd) to supply a pair of type-approved, upmast I-Band (X-Band) and E/F-Band (S-Band) SharpEye™ Doppler radars for each new ship in the Royal Malaysian Navy’s Second Generation Patrol Vessel (SGPV) programme. Also known as Littoral Combat Ships (LCS), these six new vessels are of a stealth frigate design with a displacement of 3,100 tonnes. The first radar sets were delivered in July 2016 together with a system for the Shore Integration Facility (SIF) to enable the integration of combat management and other systems to be further developed and tested onshore prior to on-board installation.

Belgium, Germany, Norway to take part in European joint tanker fleet

NATO has taken another important step forward to improve its ability to refuel aircraft in mid-air, with three Allies looking to join a European programme to acquire new refuelling aircraft. Today, 16 February 2017, Defence Ministers from Belgium, Germany, and Norway signed a Declaration of Intent to join a European multinational fleet of Airbus tankers, created by the Netherlands and Luxembourg. Read more

UMS SKELDAR announces 1st customer with delivery of the SKELDAR V-200 VTOL UAV to Indonesia

Hungarian National Police takes delivery of 5 MD902 Explorer helicopters

In late January, MD Helicopters (MDHI) and the Hungarian National Police celebrated the addition of five MD902 Explorer helicopters to their fleet at Liszt Ferenc Airport in Budapest. Thales to supply Continuous Wave Illumination transmitters to the Royal Danish Navy

NATO eyes follow-on capability for its fleet of E-3A AWACS aircraft

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced yesterday that North Atlantic Council agreed to develop a follow-on capability of its fleet of 16 E-3A AWACS aircraft. Joint Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance capability "is key for our ability to anticipate and prevent crises. It brings together data from sources like NATO AWACS aircraft, as well as national assets on land, in the air, at sea, and in space," Stoltenberg declared. Read more

U.S. army engineers have designed a new muzzle break LBOP for M119 105mm towed howitzer.

U.S. Engineers from Watervliet Arsenal have designed a 105 mm low blast overpressure muzzle brake, or LBOP. It's the first large caliber muzzle brake designed specifically for an existing gun system. Muzzle brake designs for large caliber have historically been for brand new cannon designs, but the LBOP was designed around the existing M119 howitzer platform. Read full article at this link ...

U.S. Navy Christens Austal-built Independence-class Littoral Combat Ship USS Tulsa (LCS 16)

The U.S. Navy celebrated the christening of the future USS Tulsa Littoral Combat Ship (LCS 16) on February 11, 2017 as ship sponsor, Kathy Taylor, broke the ceremonial champagne bottle on the bow of the ship at a shipyard in Mobile, Alabama. The USS Tulsa is scheduled for delivery in 2018 and has a maximum speed of more than 40 knots, a 28,000 square foot mission bay, and a flight deck capable of simultaneously holding two H-60 helicopters. Built by by shipbuilder Austal USA, the USS Tulsa is one of the Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) that is built on General Dynamics Mission Systems’ open architecture computing infrastructure (OPEN CI).

First shooting tests of new HK416F 5.56mm assault rifle by French Army soldiers.

First French Army soldiers performed shooting tests with the HK416F 5.56mm assault rifle manufactured by the German Company Heckler & Koch (HK) that will replace the old FAMAS bullpup assault rifles in service with the French Armed Forces since 1979. Brazil Gives Up Modernization Plans for Aircraft Carrier Sao Paulo, Prepares for Decommissioning

According to Brazilian daily newspaper Estado, the Brazilian Navy (Marinha do Brasil) has just decided to decommission its sole aircraft carrier Sao Paulo (hull number A12) acquired from France in 2000. Brazil has long been considering a modernization plan for the aircraft carrier with French naval shipbuilding group DCNS, but according to Estado, "modernization costs were considered excessive by the admiralty".
